The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) is the international umbrella organization of institutions and groups working in the organic field. IFOAM represents almost 800 affiliates in 120 countries. They have encouraged organic markets at national and international levels since 1972 through policy advocacy, training and the development of organic certification principles and standards. The latter includes third party certification as well as participatory guarantee systems.
IFOAM’s position on seeds calls for a stronger, independent organic propagation and seed market, including farmer-saved seeds which are crucial for diversity and for adaptation to local conditions. IFOAM (2011) notes that “variety protection can be useful, as long as breeder exemptions and farmer’s privileges are guaranteed”.
